Forgotten Voices International Conference on The Asian Holocaust (1931-1945)

This September, an international conference on the Asian Holocaust is being organized for teachers and students in the Edmonton area.  Forgotten Voices, organized by Edmonton ALPHA and co-sponsored by the China Institute of the University of Alberta and the Confucius Institute at Edmonton (EPSB), will bring to Edmonton various international scholars, lawyers, educators, and--most importantly--survivors of Imperial Japan's wartime atrocities.

While Alberta teachers of senior high Social Studies are interested in teaching their students about the inhuman treatment suffered by people throughout Asia during the years from 1931 to 1945, current resource materials are limited.  The goal of “Forgotten Voices” is to provide teachers with the opportunity to hear from those who have lived through such injustices as well as those who have devoted their lives to researching and teaching others about this history.  Print and video resources supporting the teaching of this history will also be showcased.

Beginning Friday (p.m.), Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at Lister Centre (U of A), Forgotten Voices will provide Edmonton and area students, teachers, and other educators with an opportunity to explore the impact of ultra nationalism.  Voices heard are coming from Korea, China, Japan, the U.S. and Canada.

  • Prof. TAM Yue-Him (Minnesota) will speak on why this period of Asian history has been largely forgotten or ignored.
  • ZHU Chengshan, Curator of the Nanking Massacre Victims Memorial Hall, as well as a survivor,   will speak on the Rape of Nanking.
  • Prof. SU Zhiliang (Shanghai), as well as a speaker and a 'Comfort Women' survivor from Korea,   will speak on the topic of military sexual slavery.
  • Students from Old Scona Academic in Edmonton will showcase original artwork on the theme of military sexual slavery.
  • Prof. BU Ping of the Chinese Social Science Academy will speak on Unit 731, center of Japan's chemical and biological experimentation on humans in Harbin, China.
  • Attorney KANG Jian will address the issue of forced labour and unresolved legal redress.
  • TBA speaker on the current-day Japanese denial and the efforts of Japan's modern-day ultranationalists to remove Article 9 of the National Constitution of Japan--the clause that prohibits an act of war by the state.
  • Edmonton teacher Cam Fahlman and other ALPHA Study Tour participants will speak on teaching the history of WWII in Asia in Alberta classrooms.
  • Prof. Masaki Yoshiyuki (Japan ALPHA) and Ippei Murayama (House of Sharing, Korea) will speak on their individual quests for social justice.
  • Renowned Canadian author Joy Kogawa will provide the conference's closing remarks.
  • Teachers and students will have an opportunity to meet with presenters at different times during the conference.
