<p>Using the medium of their choice, students in Grades 4 &ndash; 9 are encouraged to share their projects with the general public. It is this sharing that becomes the focal point for life-long learning.</p>
<p>Heritage Fairs were a national initiative of the Charles R Bronfman Foundation to create a better understandingof Canadian history. The first fair took place in 1993 in Winnipeg. Alberta joined in 1996. Since then, this project has grown. In 2009 over 220,000 students participated at over 350 sites in 13 provinces and territories.﻿</p>

<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">While Alberta teachers of senior high Social Studies are interested in teaching their students about the inhuman treatment suffered by people throughout Asia during the years from 1931 to 1945, current resource materials are limited.&nbsp; The goal of &ldquo;Forgotten Voices&rdquo; is to provide teachers with the opportunity to hear from those who have lived through such injustices as well as those who have devoted their lives to researching and teaching others about this history.&nbsp; Print and video resources supporting the teaching of this history will also be showcased.</span>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Beginning Friday (p.m.), Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at Lister Centre (U of A),<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>Forgotten Voices</em><span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>will provide Edmonton and area students, teachers, and other educators with an opportunity to explore the impact of ultra nationalism.&nbsp; Voices heard are coming from Korea, China, Japan, the U.S. and Canada.&nbsp;<span class="Apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span></span>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Prof. TAM Yue-Him (Minnesota) will speak on why this period of Asian history has been largely forgotten or ignored. <br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">ZHU Chengshan, Curator of the Nanking Massacre Victims Memorial Hall, as well as a survivor, &nbsp; will speak on the Rape of Nanking. <br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Prof. SU Zhiliang (Shanghai), as well as a speaker and a 'Comfort Women' survivor from Korea, &nbsp; will speak on the topic of military sexual slavery.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Students from Old Scona Academic in Edmonton will showcase original artwork on the theme of military sexual slavery.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Prof. BU Ping of the Chinese Social Science Academy will speak on Unit 731, center of Japan's chemical and biological experimentation on humans in Harbin, China.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Attorney KANG Jian will address the issue of forced labour and unresolved legal redress.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">TBA speaker on the current-day Japanese denial and the efforts of Japan's modern-day ultranationalists to remove Article 9 of the National Constitution of Japan--the clause that prohibits an act of war by the state.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Edmonton teacher Cam Fahlman and other ALPHA Study Tour participants will speak on teaching the history of WWII in Asia in Alberta classrooms.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Prof. Masaki Yoshiyuki (Japan ALPHA) and Ippei Murayama (House of Sharing, Korea) will speak on their individual quests for social justice.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Renowned Canadian author Joy Kogawa will provide the conference's closing remarks.<br /></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Teachers and students will have an opportunity to meet with presenters at different times during the conference.</span>&nbsp;</li>

Six teachers will receive a medal and $2,500. The  recipient&rsquo;s school will also receive a $1,000 prize.</p>
<p>The deadline for submitting                      <a title="nominations" href="http://www.historysociety.ca/gga.asp?subsection=nom">nominations</a> is April 30, 2010. For details call  1&ndash;800&ndash;861&ndash;1008.</p>
<p><strong><span class="bold">The Program</span></strong><br /> Canada&rsquo;s National History Society established the  Governor General&rsquo;s Awards in 1996 with the following aims:</p>
<ul>
<li>to recognize excellence in the teaching of  Canadian history regardless of the curricula in which it is taught </li>
<li>to inspire teachers and schools to strive for  excellence in Canadian history education </li>
<li>to promote and facilitate the sharing of best  practices and innovative teaching ideas within Canada&rsquo;s teaching  community </li>
</ul>
<p><strong><span class="bold">The Award</span></strong><br /> Canada&rsquo;s National History Society is looking for  Canada&rsquo;s best teachers of Canadian History and Social Studies. Whether  you have been teaching in the classroom for three years or 30, the  Society is seeking to celebrate leadership and innovation in teaching  our young people about Canada&rsquo;s past. We welcome submissions from  elementary, middle and senior school classroom teachers. Teachers can  submit a project, a body of work, or a group or school&ndash;wide initiative.</p>
<p>A committee of judges will select six recipients  based on a submission outlining the nominees&rsquo; achievements and  innovations in the field of teaching Canadian History or Social Studies.</p>
<ul>
<li>Six recipients will be selected and awarded  $2,500, a medal and a trip for two to the award ceremony. </li>
<li>Each recipient&rsquo;s school will receive $1,000. </li>
</ul>
<p>If you or a teacher you know deserves recognition,  enter your                      <a title="nomination" href="http://www.historysociety.ca/gga.asp?subsection=nom">nomination</a> by filling out the attached form. All  recipients will be notified in September 2010.</p>
<p><span class="bold">Eligibility</span> To be considered, nominees must demonstrate that they  have excelled in the teaching of Canadian History or Social Studies.</p>
<p><span class="title">Entrants must:</span></p>
<ul>
<li>be residents of Canada </li>
<li>work directly with students in a school  setting </li>
<li>teach grades ranging from K&ndash;12 during the  2009/2010 school year </li>
<li>teach units or full courses that include a  significant component of Canadian history at any grade level </li>
</ul>
<p>Self nominations are encouraged. Posthumous  nominations will not be considered. Team teaching and school&ndash;wide  initiatives are of particular interest to the Society, however, group  recipients will be expected to share any financial rewards equally among  the team.</p>
<p>Past recipients may not reapply. The Society will  provide flights and accommodation for two individuals to attend the  award ceremony.</p>]]></content></entry></feed>
